Nathan and I (Shauna) have been married since 2004 and have been in the ministry ever since. We have 6 kids, too many dogs, and a cat. From an early age I desired to take care of vulnerable children; specifically orphans and children who were in need of support and care. In 2017 we had three children enter our home through the foster care system and they each needed permanency through adoption. Throughout our ministry we have served in the local church but in 2020 God called us to something new. Along with continuing to serve in the local church we are jumping in with both feet to the help churches step into the world of orphan care! I (Shauna) am now an MA (missionary associate with the Assemblies of God) working with Backyard Orphans (a 501c3) to help guide church leaders to develop a foster care, adoption, and support ministry.
BECAUSE CHILDREN NEED FAMILIES
The Church is the solution to the orphan care crisis
Reality says there are over 400,000 children in U.S. foster care and over 100,000 kids ready to be adopted out of foster care, but data says there are over 350,000 churches in the U.S.
Media reports that there are children sleeping in child welfare offices with nowhere to go, but God says “I’ve already chosen my Church to step up.” (James 1:27)
Experts say that children need more than just room and board. Scripture says God places the lonely in families (Psalm 68:5-6) and we’re watching hundreds in our churches step up to be just that.
Historical statistics show that 50% of foster families who get licensed quit after the first year and another 50% quit the second year. Our findings show that through church support teams, retention is around 80-90%!
Doubter’s say it can’t be done. We say, through our churches, it’s already happening! We believe every church can do something.
1. Pray for the kids in foster care.
2. Pray that the local church would care for orphans.
3. Pray for our budget to be raised.
